Odessa delegation visited twin town Szeged in Hungary

The delegation of the Odessa City Council visited twin town Szeged in Hungary during Day of City celebration by invitation of the Szeged administration

On May 18-22, 2006, the delegation of the Odessa City Council visited twin town of Szeged in Hungary on the occasion of Day of City celebration by invitation on the Szeged City Hall administration.

 

The Odessa delegation was represented by the Chief of Department of youth policy, family and tourism Mr. Viktor Aksanyuk, the specialist of Department of foreign affairs, member of the City Council, and the Head of the acting commission of European integration and foreign affairs Mr. Oleksiy Muzalyev.

To participate in the Day of City celebration the delegations from seventeen twin towns from various parts of the world have come to Szeged. The place for an exposition at the City Fair has been allocated to each participant. The Odessa exposition was of great interest to the citizens and guests of Szeged, where the whole district is named after our city.
 
 
The Odessa delegation was met by Mr. Sándor Nagy, Vice-Mayor of Szeged.
 

Vice-Mayor has told the Odessants about the problems they encountered in Szeged at time of Hungary’s integration into the European Union. First of all, the focus was to have all the statutory acts in conformity with the EU laws and standards. Radical changes in the legislation caused changes in the living style of the population. That fact that Hungary was democratic and open country even during socialism era has also contributed a lot to the successful integration of Hungary into the EU, inclined to believe Mr. Sándor Nagy. Szeged has been awarded several large grants on the development of water supply system in the city, processing of waste, development of parks, and improvement of ecology. However, after country’s integration in to the EU, Szeged discovered that young specialists and high school graduates leave Hungary for other EU countries to work. The City Council takes now all possible measures to make Szeged more attractive to the youngsters to stay and work in the native town. Majority of Szeged population is in favour of the country’s integration into EU. Now Hungary is under preparation to form part of the Schengen zone and introduce a new currency – Euro. Vice-Mayor of Szeged has also shared city plans on tourism development, transformation of Tisza river into the transport way for trade between the Danube ports of Odessa region and Szeged. He has also suggested organizing an exchange of work experience of the City Councils of Szeged and Odessa.. In the end of the official meeting the delegation of the Odessa City Council has handed over the Letter from the Odessa City Mayor Mr. Eduard Gurvits to the Mayor of Szeged Dr. László Botka.
Member of the Odessa City Council, Head of the Commission of the European integration and foreign affairs Mr. Oleksiy Muzalyev has been invited to participate in the Grand Session of the Szeged City Council.
