V International Piano Contest in memory of Emil Gilels started in Odessa

50 pianists take part in the V International Piano Contest in memory of Emil Gilels in Odessa.

On October 16 – 27, 2012, 50 pianists from different world countries will be participating in the V International Piano Contest in memory of Emil Gilels in Odessa.

Odessa is famous all around the world as a motherland of talents, and Odessa piano playing school is a very famous one. The Piano Contest in memory of Emil Gilels is destined to discover new young talents who deserve to bear the honorary name of the winner of the prestigious international contest.

The festive opening ceremony was held on October 16, 2012, at the Big Chamber of Odessa regional Concert Hall. At the ceremony, two piano concerts accompanied by Odessa National Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Ukraine’s Honored Artist Hobart Earl were be performed.
The festive Closing Ceremony, awarding ceremony and laureates’ concert will take place on October 27.

 

The respectable jury of the Contest consists of outstanding pianists and pedagogues, representatives of different piano playing schools of USA, Belgium, Ukraine, France and Russia.


The winner of the contest will receive a special prize from Odessa City Mayor Aleksey Kostusyev as well – UAH 10 000.


The winners of the Grand Prix and the First Prize will perform concerts accompanied by Odessa National Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Ukraine’s Honored Artist Hobart Earl.

 

The Contest consists of a qualifying round (via videos), two solo rounds and a Final one accompanied by Odessa National Symphonic Orchestra.

 

This year, the respectable jury selected 50 pianists from 13 world countries (Georgia, Byelorussia, China, Korea, Russia, Serbia, USA, Ukraine, Japan, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and France) from over 100 applications having been received.

 

The Awards of the Contest are the following:
Grand Prix ($ 10 000, Laureate Title and a Golden medal);
1st Prize ($ 7 000, Laureate Title and a Golden medal);
2nd Prize ($ 4 000, Laureate Title and a Silver medal);
3rd Prize ($ 3 000, Laureate Title and a Bronze medal).

Two diplomas and $500 prizes are meant for the participants having entered the Finals.
On top of that, there are special prizes as well, i.e. “Best Ukrainian Performer”, “Best Performance of the Ukrainian Composer’s Work”, “The Best Youngest Performer” etc.

Emil Gilels has graduated from Odessa Conservatoire, the class of Reignbald.

 In 1933 the sixteen-years old Emil became the winner of the first All-Union Competition of Musicians-performers.
 
Having graduated from Odessa Conservatoire, Gilels decided to go to Moscow to H.G. Neygauz.
 
In 1938 Gilels gained a brilliant victory on Brussels where there was held the International competitionm of pianists in memory of Eugene Izai.
