Memorial plaque introduced at the former building of US Consulate in Odessa

The Ambassador of the US to Ukraine Mr. John F. Tefft took part in the festive memorial plaque opening at the building of the former US Consulate in Odessa.

The anniversary of USA Consulate opening in Odessa was festively celebrated in our city. The official celebration date is timed for the memorial plaque’s having been installed at 6, Chaykovskiy Lane, where the American Consulate has been situated in 1884 – 1891. The Consulate itself, though, appeared in Odessa in 1830.

The Ambassador of the US to Ukraine Mr. John F. Tefft took part in the festive memorial plaque opening ceremony.

“In 1830, Odessa has already been a prosperous port city. In the middle of the 19th century, the famous American writer Mark Twain visited your city, and after he’s come back home, he wrote in a newspaper, “I have not felt so much at home for a long time as I did when I "raised the hill" and stood in Odessa for the first time. It looked just like an American city; fine, broad streets, and straight as well; low houses, (two or three stories,) wide, neat, and free from any quaintness of architectural ornamentation; locust trees bordering the sidewalks (they call them acacias;) a stirring, business-look about the streets and the stores; fast walkers; a familiar new look about the houses and every thing; yea, and a driving and smothering cloud of dust that was so like a message from our own dear native land that we could hardly refrain from shedding a few grateful tears and execrations in the old time-honored American way. Look up the street or down the street, this way or that way, we saw only America!”. And today, we’ve gathered together to celebrate an important event – the anniversary of opening the US Consulate in Odessa”, emphasized Mr. Tefft.

Odessa City Deputy Mayor Yelena Pavlova took part in the ceremony, too, “Today, we have made yet another step towards each other. Odessa is an open city, it’s the city of the world. Everyone who comes here feels it, appreciates it and understand that Odessa in the international marine gate of our country, as well. Each house, each building in our city is a part of Odessa’s history. And today, we’ve acquired an opportunity to open yet another page on this history”.
