A newly-born muntjac familiarized itself with the adult enclosure of Odessa Zoo

For the first time in Odessa Zoo’s history, a pair of dwarf deers – Chinese muntjacs – gave life to a cub.

A newly-born cub of a pair of dwarf deers – Chinese muntjacs – went public in Odessa Zoo. The little muntjac having been born on June 17, has already familiarized itself with the adult enclosure.

“These little gracious deers are a great attraction to the visitors. They don’t have ramose horns, they don’t look formidable or stately, but, despite their small stature, they are very sylphlike and are able to fend for themselves, even though their weight doesn’t usually exceed 15 kilos. Chinese muntjac isn’t often seen in the zoos, though”, said Odessa Zoo Director Igor Byelyakov.

The Chinese muntjacs feel themselves so well in Odessa Zoo, that they’ve given life to a cub. For the first time, two male dwarf deers appeared at the Zoo 2.5 years ago, and in 2012, two female ones were brought for them.

The little muntjac will be named by Odessa’s kids on July 20, at Odessa Zoo’s traditional Cubs Day.

Muntjacs, also known as barking deer and Mastreani deer, are small deer of the genus Muntiacus. Muntjacs are the oldest known deer, appearing 15–35 million years ago, with remains found in Miocene deposits in France, Germany and Poland.
