Snowdrops blooming in Odessa Botanic Garden in January

The professionals are the beholders of a botanic sensation now – snowdrops are blooming in January for the first time in 140 years.

It’s hard to imagine, but there was no trees at all in Odessa 200 years ago. In 1820, in Langerone’s times, a Botanic Garden to become the ancestor of Ukraine’s steppe regions parks was founded behind Kulikovo field in order to create a blooming city out of a golden and green steppe ocean. At the time being, there are over 3000 species of different age “living” at 16 ha area of Odessa National University Botanic Garden of French blvd. And the “population” increases each year. The professionals are the beholders of a botanic sensation now – snowdrops are blooming in January for the first time in 140 years.
Now, the snowdrop has a right to have pretensions of the winter symbol of the year, and not the spring one. The perennial plants, that usually bloom in the end of February, did also respond on the weather’s slyness of being delusively warm. These are the decorative onion, naked-flowered jasmine, sweet-scented viburnum having the fresh lilac fragrance and turning the usual idea of seasons upside down. The Caucasian hellebore did believe in spring’s having come as well. According to the Botanic Garden workers’ forecast, the flowers will die in case of a sharp cold spell and this spring, each “credulous” plant’s (i.e. the ones having come out) bloom will be less bountiful. The rest of the rare plants collection will be safely protected during the forthcoming cold snap. In “real” spring (according to the calendar), starting from April, 10, Odessa Botanic Garden will be ready to meet all the visitors willing to come and admire magnificence of the collection having been gathered and delivered here for over 190 years from the different corners of the world.
