In Odessa Zoo rescued a pelican, listed in the IUCN Red Book

The workers of Odessa zoo have helped the injured pelican

January 16,  Odessa Zoo have received a call from the city Ministry of Emergency Situations with information about the wounded pelican. The residents of Odessa who found and picked up the bird gave it to the representative of Odessa Zoo. The pelican was immediately taken to a zoo rehabilitation center for wild animals, where it received the necessary veterinary care.

The examination shown that the bird wounded its wing, it is exhausted and needs a long period of nursing.
As defined zoo ornithologists the found bird belongs to the species from the Red List "Dalmatian Pelican" (the pelicans contained in Odessa Zoo belong to a different species - "White Pelican"). This young animal was born last year. Presumably the bird could be wounded during the migration to the wintering grounds.

Reference: Dalmatian Pelican is a very rare species listed in the Red Book. In Ukraine, the bird nests in the Danube flooded areas and in the Black Sea Reserve. The saved bird is extremely valuable from an environmental point of view.
