Memorial plaque to legendary Rear Admiral Jerzy Swirski was opened in Odessa

Memorial plaque to the famous Rear Admiral Jerzy Swirski was opened on the facade of headquarters building of Odessa Maritime Guard detachment. Photo

Several years ago, the Consulate General of Poland in Odessa turned to historical and toponymic commission of Odessa City Council’s executive committee with a request on the establishment of memorial plaque to Rear Admiral, commander of the Independent Ukraine’s Navy in 1918, Vice-Admiral of the Polish Republic Jerzy Swirski. The historical and toponymic Commission adopted a decision on installation of memorial plaque to Jerzy Swirski after studying of all the materials.


On July 27, 2015 was held the opening of memorial plaque to Rear Admiral Jerzy Swirski on the facade of headquarters building of Odessa Maritime Guard detachment.

The plaque contains the following text: "In memory of Jerzy Swirski (1882-1959) Rear Admiral, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy in 1918, the commander of the League of Polish Renaissance Navy, which was formed in Odessa in 1918, Vice-Admiral, organizer and commander of the Navy of the Republic of Poland in 1922-1947 years".
The symbols of Polish and Ukrainian fleets are also placed on the plaque.

 

Representatives of the Polish side told about the role of Admiral Jerzy Swirski in the development of Ukrainian and Polish fleets, his merits to Ukraine and Poland, expressed gratitude to Ukrainian side and the city government for the opportunity of memorizing the outstanding Pole.

The opening of memorial plaque to Vice Admiral of the Polish Republic Jerzy Swirski was attended by deputy mayor of Odessa Zinaida Tsvirinko, representatives of Odessa Regional Council and Odessa Regional State Administration, the commander of the Naval Forces of Ukraine, representatives of the Navy of Ukraine, Minister , Head of the Office for War Veterans and Repressed Persons the Republic of Poland Mr. J. Czekanowski, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, the Polish Embassy in Ukraine, the General Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Odessa, clergy, and the other.

Jerzy Swirski (5 April 1882, Kalisz -12 June 1959, London) was a Polish vice admiral and officer in Independent Ukrainian Navy and Polish Navy. He served in the Black Sea Fleet until the end of the World War I. In 1918 he joined the Ukrainian Navy. In 1919 he joined the Polish Navy. From 1925 to 1947 he was Director of the Polish Navy in the Polish Ministry of Military Affairs (after 1939, in the Polish Government in Exile). After World War II he remained in the United Kingdom.
