The Mayor of Odessa signed the Paris Declaration and joined the initiative of the mayors of the major cities around the world to overcome the AIDS epidemic

February 28, 2017, the Mayor of Odessa Gennadiy Trukhanov signed the Paris Declaration and joined the initiative of the mayors of more than 200 major cities around the world to accelerate action to overcome the AIDS epidemic. The second party-the agreement was signed by the Director of the United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) in Ukraine Jacek Tishko.

Thus, Odessa became the second city after Kyiv in Ukraine, which formally expressed its willingness to use international experience in combating dangerous viral diseases.
The ceremony gathered UN Secretary General special envoy on HIV/AIDS in EECA Michel Kazatchkine, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis, director of the State Institution “Ukrainian Center for Social Disease Control of the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine” Nataliya Nizova, representatives of UN family in Ukraine, representatives of the Network of People Living with HIV, «Alliance for Public Health» Andrey Klepnikov and other organitsations.

Gennadiy Trukhanov told that Odessa was one of the first cities which organized efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis. Odessa became the first city of Ukraine, which implements a new form of cooperation with non-governmental organizations through the Program of the social order in 2000. The city is fully provided with BCG vaccinations, medications, specific antiretroviral therapy (ART) and drugs for substitution maintenance therapy.


The signing of the Declaration confirms the intention of the city of Odessa to achieve the 90-90-90 targets by 2020: 90% of the people who live with HIV and know their HIV status; 90% of people who know about their HIV-positive status and get treatment; 90% of people who get treatment will have a viral load that is not defined.

On the first of January 2017 11 thousand 313 HIV-infected adult population, including 3888 patients with AIDS were registered for medical treatment in Odessa.
